EPISODE THREE: YAMAN and Contemporary Politics.
In the not too distant past, it is an incontrovertible fact that Alhaji Shuaibu Yaman Abdullahi was one of the political gladiators that were schooled in the foxy fortress of the foremost legendary Oloye Olusola Saraki clientele-oriented ideological persuasion (The PDP). YAMAN is one of the biggest trees with the strongest root considering his impact and commitment to the corridors of power since the days of the legendary Oloye Saraki. Alhaji Shuaibu YAMAN Abdullahi played tectonic roles unbeknownst to the political players of those good unforgettable period.
At the time, Alhaji Shuaibu YAMAN Abdullahi contested for the governorship seat in 2003 and later for the Kwara North Senatorial seat on the platform of ACPN in 2011. But unfortunately, the price of his loyalty was not paid. Quoting from the historical bank of Kwara politics, Kwara North which is a senatorial district in the state has been marginalized and suffered neglect and relegation projecting her as a backwater along the line of politics and economy. The only time the Kwara North had the opportunity at the crack of the highest vantage position (Governor) in the order of leadership hierarchy in the state was in January 1992 when Alhaji Sha'aba Lafiagi was elected the governor of Kwara State on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) that was later ousted from the office by the administration of General Sani Abacha in November 1993. The electoral strength of the Kwara North cannot be overestimated as they were instrumental to the emergence of governors from the Kwara central and south. Albeit, their electoral strength has been exploited since 1999 when the country returned to civil rule. They were instrumental to the emergence of Alhaji Mohammed Lawal from Kwara Central in 1999, Dr Bukola Saraki also from the Kwara Central from 2003- to 2011, and Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed from Kwara South from 2003-to 2011, and the incumbent Governor Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq who is also from Kwara Central.
In an attempt to redress the grievances of the Kwara North, Kwara PDP under the leadership of their pragmatic national leader, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki and other party elders decided that the party's gubernatorial ticket should be zoned to Kwara North and micro-zoned to Edu and Patigi LGAs.
The decisive resolution of the Kwara PDP is indeed a unique turning point in the political history of the state and the nation at large.
It is consequential not to reiterate at this level considering the present political climate of Kwara politics that the "Consensus" mode of primary is the only mode that can challenge the incumbent Governor of the ruling All Progressive Party (APC) who already has the incumbency factor in his favour.
Politics is all about consensus building, and to build consensus, a statesman must have the capacity to engage across any political divide through negotiation, consultation and dialogue to come to a common agreement to unite the people under one purpose. The time has come for our politicians to invest their time and energy in building consensus on issues that affect our lives and not just in the selection of candidates for elections, but in their duty to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.
If PDP wins, we all won and the process that would lead to salvaging the state from its current political and economic quagmire in which it finds itself should be activated.
With the ongoing intense politicking, horse-trading, and manoeuvring by the political juggernauts of the Kwara North, it is becoming reasonably inevitable that Alhaji Shuaibu Yaman Abdullahi is destined for the exalted position, and as such, we are indeed optimistic that the political gladiator in discourse is on the verge of clinching the PDP gubernatorial ticket.
Given the precedents and wide experience in the political and economic arena of the country, Alhaji Shuaibu Yaman Abdullahi, Danmasanni of Tsonga is the best man for the job and supporting him is an act of contributing to the common good of our dear state.
THE TIME IS NOW!
